If you miss old-school Quake 3 then definitely get Quake 3 and Team arena as a bundle. what to get? It depends on what you want. One serious difference from Q3A and Quake Live is Champions has no dedicated servers or server browser. None of the cosmetics affect the actual gameplay itself. Also of note is there's an unlock system for cosmetics - alternate weapon models, player models and skins, etc.
Big, slow characters are easier to hit but have more health and armor. Small, fast characters are hard to hit but die in fewer shots. You can shoot a railgun between a character's knees and it will miss.
Each champion also has specific movement physics and speed, and the physical size of the player model reflects the hitbox as the hit detection is model-based instead of just a rectangular solid as in the previous Quake titles. Each champion also has a specific armor and health count and you spawn with max armor and health. Active abilities take 45 seconds to recharge but can be recharged faster by picking up hourglass items. For example, Ranger has an orb he can throw and use to teleport as an active ability, and his passive ability is reduced self damage for rocket jumping. Each player character has specific active and passive abilties. The graphics are fantastic, the weapons loadout is somewhat faithful to Q3 with the exception of the grenade launcher being replaced with the tri-bolt, which is like a short range mini 3-shot burst rocket launcher, and the ability to select a starting weapon of either a single barreled shotgun, nailgun, or machinegun. Quake Champions is a work in progress as it's in Early Access and the gameplay is being constantly tweaked. Maps are mostly the classic Q3 maps plus some popular third-party maps but there's been cosmetic changes. There is no mod support, but an active player base. Quake Live has bright skins, Team Arena weapons added, no gibs, a different HUD, and adds a new weapon in the form of the Heavy Machinegun, and runs better on newer computers. Player count is fairly low at present relatively speaking. The latter can be dealt with by using IOQuake3 sourceport. It has gibs and mod support, but is an older engine.
